Jan 12 - Walking and Tooth

We had a really fun day today.

We woke up around 6AM again and went to Bagel Bar. We all ate the same things and Yoav made another mess.

Then we played for a while in the room until 10:45 when we took a walk to get Yoav to sleep. He fell right asleep and then we came back and I worked until Yoav woke up at 1.

Then we got ready to go out to the pool. I put on Yoav's swimsuit and when I showed him himself in the full length mirror, he got excited and WALKED to the mirror - he took three steps in a row! He didn't acknowledge that he had walked.

Later in the afternoon, I purposely stood Yoav up and moved a bit away from him to see if he would walk to me and he did!! Again about three steps.

Then we went to the pool - Yoav wasn't too thrilled to go in - we sat on the step for a while and he splashed with his feet. After a while when he was used to the water we went in for a few minutes but he quickly wanted to get out.

After the pool, we went to the Bal Harbour mall. Yoav and I held hands and he actually walked all the way over there (I held him to cross the streets). His balance is getting much better.

At the mall (it's an outside mall), we walked around looking at the window displays, watched the big fish in the fish pool, watched the fountains, etc.

Then we came back to the hotel room and ate an apple, when I felt a new tooth - I think today is the first day it came through because I've been checking a lot and Yoav bites on my fingers some. It's the top left, second tooth over.

Jeremy came home around 8 just after Yoav had fallen asleep and we went to Carpacio at the Bal Harbour mall for dinner.

Jan 11 - First steps & signing

We are staying at the Sheraton Bal Harbour. Yoav woke up at 6am and we went to Bagel Bar for breakfast. We'd been there before on previous visits and it's really good! I got eggs over easy, potatoes, whole wheat bagel w/ cream cheese & coffee. yoav got a whole wheat bagel. He made a bit of a mess but was pretty busy eating his bagel and I actually got to relax a little and eat and drink my coffee.

Then Jeremy went to the airport and we went back to the hotel. We took a walk over to the Bal Harbour shops, which are really fancy - Valentino, Tiffany, etc. They have a Gap, too, though so I got a belt, a long sleeved shirt for Jeremy reduced to $13 and a pair of jeans for me reduced from $58 to $19.99 (which I thought I was getting them for) to $9.99 that they rung up for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yoav did his first signs himself at the mall - it's an outdoor mall with a lot of ceiling fans - he was doing the sign for ceiling fan :)

Yoav fell asleep at 11 and I came back to the hotel to work.

After that we played - Yoav took another step over to me.

At night, we went out to dinner - Yoav made a HUGE mess mostly because he was tired. I got pasta primavera and he ate a lot of my peas and made a mess of the pasta. When we got back, Yoav and I got ready for bed and went to sleep.

Israel - Jan 6

Today was a fun day - we woke up and walked to the local makolet (small grocery) to get bread for breakfast. We ate breakfast at home (bread, cheese, coffee).

Then we went to the mall (Dizingoff Center). I bought Yoav a few really cute pairs of pants at Fox Baby. I got Jana a cute pair of pants too. We also got Yoav a book by Paol Kor. There was a great indoor playground that Yoav played on for a while. He met a little girl who was just learning to crawl who he was interested in. He gave her a big cuddle and they both poked at eachother a little. Yoav climbed on the equipment some and went down a small slide completely by himself.

The mall closed at 3pm for Shabbat - on the way home, we parked near Old Jaffa and walked around for an hour or so.

Then we went home - Yoav climbed up and down the stairs a bunch of times with Jeremy while I took a shower and got ready for dinner.

For dinner, we walked around neve Tzedek for a place to go. The one we wanted to go to (Nana) was booked so we walked back closer to the apartment to Suzanna. Luckily with all the walking, Yoav fell asleep so we got to have a quiet meal in peace!

Israel - Jan 4

Today was a relaxing day.

We ate breakfast at home - whole wheat rolls, goat cheese, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers and coffee. Yoav got hives from something :( He ate a lot of the eggs, so it might have been from the egg whites. If they are not very well done, the white part can cause allergies. Otherwise, it was the goat cheese - I'll try them separately when I get home next week to try to figure it out.

Then we walked around Neve Tzedek a bit and went to a playground. Yoav went on the swings for a few minutes (he seems to get a little motion sick from swings), the slides and a few climbing objects.

For lunch we went to a soup restaurant called Boaz in a suberb of Tel Aviv. It was great - I got bean soup. Yoav was asleep so he didn't get any.

In the afternoon, we played in the apartment for a bit Yoav stood up all by himself without the aid of anything. He's stood alone by standing and holding onto something and letting go before, but this time he was playing on the floor in a squatting position and just stood up.

Then we took a walk and picked up two little cakes at a nearby bakery for Sara and Yehuda (my relatives) who came over at 7:30.

For dinner we got sandwiches at a coffee shop. Yoav was happy when sharing my veggie sandwich, but got tired of eating quickly and lost his patience. He started crying so I took him outside while Jeremy paid the bill.

In the evening, Sara and Yehuda came by. I think the connection is that Yehuda's father was grandpa Shiskin's cousin. They were very nice. Sara is from Bulgaria. She lived there for about 10 years before coming to Israel. They brought Yoav a cute stuffed puppy dog. Sara was nice with Yoav. She said he was very cute "a hamud" and sweet. He was in great spirits for the visit. Jeremy and Yehuda talked mostly in hebrew and Sara and I talked in English. She was a special ed teacher of some sort for high schoolers and retired two years ago. She now keeps herself busy painting, drawing, recently started decoupage, and is trying to learn bridge.

Israel - Jan 1

Today was quiet. We went nearby in Tel Aviv to meet friends (Noam, Nickola, and kids - Shachar (9), Leah (6) and Hillel (1)). We walked around and got soup for lunch, which Yoav LOVED. I got a bean soup and he liked the beans and even liked to eat the soupy part from a spoon.

Afterwards, they all came back to our apartment and we lit Hanukkah candles and sang a few Hanukkah songs including Mao Tzur (sp?). Yoav loved Leah and Hillel. Leah kept making funny faces at Yoav and making him laugh. Yoav and Hillel spent some time standing at the coffee table. Yoav started a game of peek-a-boo with Hillel - Yoav ducked down and popped up to look at Hillel. He played a few rounds of the game :)

After that, we relaxed a bit in the apartment until Yoav fell asleep around 10pm. Jeremy and I did some work and then read for an hour or so.
